Expression is our term for how we communicate the wonderment and reverence of Jesus. Sometimes in order to fully express our faith we need to ditch everyday talk and use song, poetry, spoken word, and art. For Capital Mosaic this was very much one of our most challenging journeys. It has become a liberating expression of our faith.

Kingdom of God from small beginnings
– increase –
microscopic bubbles of fermentation, invisible
obscure, kneading into this life
spreading through my reality
its beginnings in the inner place,
secret, bubbling bubbling, growing
infiltrating from the centre
heart to head this changing work of grace
transforming this life.

Michele C.
Inspired by the Parable of the Yeast in Luke 13:20-21. Jesus asked, “What else is the Kingdom of God like? It is like the yeast a woman used in making bread. Even though she put only a little yeast in three measures of flour, it permeated every part of the dough.”

Reading articles with the tagline “All Lives Matter”

I pause to wonder what is offered at its platter
Do we see every kind of dish and cuisine
Or do we see a certain few, curated and clean?

Did all lives matter when Houston was ravaged by storm?
Of course not – generosity of food and finance was the norm.
Did all lives matter when Christchurch was shaken?
Of course not – the deep call for unity was awakened.

Did all lives matter when indigenous culture was under attack?
Surely not – there were mainly tales of white, over black.
Did all lives matter when poverty and depravity can be justified?
Surely not – yet the powerful maintain a subtle apartheid.

The allure of equality lies with veiled correction
Perpetuating justice for only a certain selection
Where prejudice lies in the hands of power
Sanitising generations’ plight into rational paradigms of willpower

This is not the way God intended
To bestow mercy when tenacity is extended
To bring justice on behalf of the desperate and hardworking
To allocate grace away from the hidden and lurking

By no means, his mercy is undeserving
His power is spread evenly amongst the observing
His justice orients away from those naive and ignoring
His grace extends across narratives warring and soaring

God, we ask for a new normal
For the oppressed, we demand a new normal
For the discriminated, we plead for a new normal
For the corrupt and unjust, we spur a new normal
Without the use of swift taglines to facilitate the current normal
Rather speak to me and we and the fear of this new normal

God, I wonder why you gave us freedom

The myth that we could choose or control when we need ‘em

For as we are free to create time and space
We are free to leave your Holy place

For as we are free to commit to loyalty
We are free to pursue an earthly royalty

For as we are free to serve each other kindly
We are free to lavish ourselves kindly

For as we are free to wash each other’s feet
We are free to reserve a back seat

For as we are free to advocate for equality
We are free to perpetuate earth’s inequality

For as we are free to care for your creation
We are free to distance ourselves in temptation

For as we are free to pursue boldness of peace
We are free to be dissuaded from endurance’s grease

We thank you that we are not made as mindless souls
Yet in the freedom of endless roads and goals

Instill the death of our self-driven mentality
Instill the hope within our spiritual poverty
Instill the humility that resonates your grace
Instill the peace that radiates your face

You have come with your great shining,

attempting to sing in a new day,
but I have not the heart to receive your shining.

I know it is the hour of resurrection and joy,
and you are trying to wake up my gladness.
Please respect my deary mood.

Your light comes into my darkness,
yet my darkness remains unlit.
All the same, I ask you to keep shining,
and I will try not to be angry at your brightness.
Perhaps at some moment during this day
your glance of light will fall into my wearied soul.

I do not ask you to stop shining,
only this–understand my dark moment
and be gentle with your light.
Lord of Morning Light, respect my darkness.

O Lord, in whom we live and move and have our being!

We have been asleep too long.
Heal the unseeing part of our lives.
Lead us to our awakening places.
Awaken us to the new light.
Open the doors of our hearts,
the windows of our souls,
the walls of our minds.
Awaken us to hope.
Awaken us to joy.
Awaken us to love.
Awaken us to new insights.
Make our hearts ready to receive the brightness of your presence.
To you Lord, we give praise.

I am an original
One of a kind
There is no one else

He made me
an original,
one of a kind
there is no one else
just like me.

I am an original
But not the same as
I am made
By Love
With love
for love
To love.

I am an original
An authentic, genuine, one off
in the secret place
the Original Creator,
made in his image
an irrefutable likeness,
an image of himself.

I am an original
a masterpiece
of immeasurable
I am an original.

A collection of collaborative Psalms from Capital Mosaic community

Psalm 1 I like it when life balanced and I’m in control. I work really hard to keep it like that, not because I am a control freak, but because life is good when it is like that.

How quickly this changes on us. Like a sudden storm that blows in. Life’s issues can become very overwhelming.

When I turn to see if you’re there, I surprised to see that you’re right behind me, but I guess I haven’t really been looking for you. I do get confused though, why you let all these things happen, this way, all at once.

Do what I can’t do. Don’t give up. When I drop the ball, don’t you drop the ball. I’m gonna let it go and trust.

Psalm 2 For the Lord our God is with us. Or so I tell myself. Painful cycles of complacency, crazy turmoil, questions more questions.

Why do I have to go through this? How do you explain this to me? Life is like a roller-coaster.

Ah, this is about you! You’re courageous. You never give up on us.

Walk with us through the roller coaster of life. Affirm Your love to us. Give us peace with the unknown. Love us. Thank you for being with us in the rough times and the good times. For the Lord our God is with us.

Psalm 3 I stood in the desert. I was parched, I was thirsty.

Surrounded by others, as dry as each other. We had settled by an Oasis that had since dried up.

The thirst told me that water was out there over the horizon.

Some of us left. I followed, convinced. Searching for something better, something more.

We met many along the way. Some sceptics, scoffers, some full of hope. Each of us had a different story, but a common path.

After waiting and waiting holding each other up. We have tasted the dew on the ground, seen green on the horizon.

Together we walk. Together we walk.

Psalm 4 Sometimes we limit ourselves. Dream big with eyes open, asking not could I achieve XYZ, but asking why couldn’t I. I must rely on you LORD.

I am overwhelmed with Joy, blessed to be where I am, blessed to be where I am going, excited for what is to come. LORD help me not to limit you by the site of my dreams, or the quantity of my courage.

Help me see tomorrow as you see tomorrow. Open my eyes to your potential in me, asking myself, not could I achieve, but asking why couldn’t I.

God is magnificent; he can never be praised enough.

There are no boundaries to his greatness.
God is remarkable,
his compassion for us never wavers for us.
I can hardly believe that I can go nowhere that isn’t under your peace.
Your peace. No galaxy too big.
No reality untouched
Your peace is everywhere.
Whether the world I know, or one untouched –
You are there.
Your peace goes before as a blanket – everywhere.
God is magnificent; he can never be praised enough.
There are no boundaries to his greatness.

His influence has no end, his reach knows no limits.
Our Lord is great, with limitless strength;
We’ll never comprehend what he knows and does.

I heard you never change
And you’ve never withdrawn.
Your sameness moves fresh in each generation
(every generation)
All over the world.
New and different stories
But just one you.

The trademark on his works is love – you hem me in, behind and b4 me.
For you created
My inmost being
U knit me 2gether in my mother’s womb.
I praise u because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
Your works r wonderful
I know that full well.
My frame was not hidden from u
When I was made in the secret place
When I was woven 2gther in the depths of the earth
You eyes saw my unformed body
All the days ordained 4 me
Were written in your book
B4 1 of them came to be.

God’s workload is heavy,
but he is well matched to his tasks.
Everything God does is right –
the trademark on all his works is love.

God is fair and all knowing.
He doesn’t give us what we want
He gives us what we need.
Thank you for my life.
You’re my God, and I thank you.
O my God, I lift high your praise.
Thank GOD—he’s so good.
His love never quits!
You can never be praised enough
You are great beyond bounds
You notice me
You made me
You keep your word
Why would I worship anything
else, anyone else
I choose you!
You’re my God, and I thank you.
O my God, I lift high your praise.
Thank GOD—he’s so good.
His love never quits!

Your goodness permeates my life.
God, you are my safe place.
You control everything –
So    I    can    relax.
God, you did everything you promised,
And I’m thanking you with all my heart.

Take a look at God’s wonders –
they’ll take your breath away.
Look at the details of
a person’s face, how meticulously
sculpted they are.
Each are different, yet
A face show so much
emotion, joy, sadness,
curiosity……..or just plain
Clearly, a face shows the
Work of an artist!

The beauty of the baby leopard
the splendor of a peacock’s wide fanned tail
the majesty of the snow peaked mountains
the awesomeness of the giant century old kauri trees.
Take a look at God’s wonders –
they’ll take your breath away.

I am stunned.
Stopped in my tracks.
Totally overwhelmed,
bowled over by your greatness.
Take a look at God’s wonders –
they’ll take your breath away.

Though my eyes cannot see
Yet will I seek your face.
The sun rising in all its splendor
Is only a fraction of your beauty.
Take a look at God’s wonders –
they’ll take your breath away.

Lord, look at me,

Remind me of the journey
Of my road to redemption.
You know me, totally
Head to toe
Between these ears
And in my heart.
No one else will do.
A man alone, an illusion
A boy with no Dad, in confusion
So be my Father, and be my partner
I am honoured to be your boy,
Your friend.
My life I am no longer willing to defend
Because yours is an invitation to get on the mend.
I take your hand and
Step out of the sand
Onto a Holy place to stand.

God’s love is perfect
It is everlasting – never quits.
He turns something so horrible, the cross into the
Ultimate expression of his Love, glory, caring, compassion, plan, sacrifice, and the list goes on

Your goodness, your splendour are blinding.
Being in your presence and experiencing you beauty
I feel you wash over me as a never ending flow,
infiltrating my inner most soul and leaving a mark that I cannot keep secret.
That mark is one of your wonders,
as visible to me as the highest mountain
or the most vast ocean.
Not only are you visible all around me, but deep inside me, too.
